Jacques Demy was responsible for a unique collection of cinema unlike any other. And central to his reputation was the brace of song-based feature films – Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and this superb film, The Young Girls of Rochefort. To describe it as a surreal and joyous celebration is perhaps an understatement. Two twin girls in a provincial town are enchanted by the arrival of a suave troupe of young entertainers. The tale is unashamedly sentimental, and the energy is relentless, and infectious. Demy re-joined his creative partners Catherine Deneueve, and Michel Legrand, and adds to the mix some fine star power with Daneille Darrieux, and Gene Kelly. And for maximum impact, he also re-painted the central square of the city of Rochefort. “A film whose scenario is much less important than its feeling of euphoria” says Demy himself.
